Thoughts from a Green-Lover

Yeah—So I’m a Green Lover.

Many people are surprised to know that my favorite colour is green. Well I’m equally surprised that they think of it as unfeminine or not suitable for a woman like me.

This led me to some thinking-time (since I had a lot when I got this horrible chicken pox). Why did I end up loving this color? When did it start to happen?

I guess my fascination with it started when my sister got hospitalized (for the nth time). When you’re in an area full of chaos, your head filled with worries and you try to think of something else to pass time, you get to notice many things. I realized that most hospitals I’ve been to were coloured green. My mom told me it was because it’s relaxing. You see, I was not really sold into it at that time. After all, the girl in me always thought that all girls should like Pink or Lavander. But then again, I started to collect my things in shades of green. I even remember talking my sisters into painting our old house’s interior with mint and rose linings. It was awesome.

It’s sad that the word green is being used as an urban slang for people with compulsively erotic thoughts, has a tendency to give innocent phrases a sexual connotation or is dirty minded. Jealousy and envy has also been referred to as the green-eyed monster. But let me tell you why it’s more than that for a green-lover such as me.

Green is life and growth. When you go out and explore nature, this is the most dominant colour you’ll see: Everything that breathes, all those that move. Even when I have my eyes closed, when I think of life, I see abundance of this wonderful shade behind my lids: The green of the jungle and the untouched forests, the sweetness of lime, the distinct taste of olive, the relaxing smell of mint and eucalyptus, the tall Pine trees and beautiful Shamrock leaves, the wild green of the sea. And of course, one could not forget the glow of Spring.

Green is widely known as a calming and cooling shade. Ironically, it was also the colour used for "GO” signals. These only show that green denotes balance and harmony. For one needs to be able to find his inner peace and know how to work for his needs and dreams if he wants to have balance in his life. Yin and Yang. Tit for Tat. That is what it means to me.

I suppose this is also the reason why I prefer the mountains over the beach. Why I love trekking more than swimming. Why I love various physical activities in nature more than working out in an enclosed gym. Why I love the feel of air on my face while in a high place overlooking wonders more than lounging under the sun.

Yep. I’m a green lover and I’m definitely proud of it. Soon, one more of my dreams will rise in the middle of my favourite colour. I can hardly wait.
